COLUMBUS -

State Representative John Becker (R-Union Township) sponsored House Bill 305. This bill would make Ohio a closed primary state and add stability to our elections system. Current registered voters would not be required to do anything and would remain affiliated with their current party or no party.

New voters would have the opportunity, but no requirement, to affiliate with the party of their choice on the voter registration form.

Any voter can change parties or disaffiliate with their party at any time, except within 30 days of an election. Voters will no longer be permitted to affiliate or change parties during a primary election. “Political shenanigans, such as ‘Operation Chaos’ orchestrated by Rush Limbaugh during the 2008 primary election would no longer be effective, ” said Becker.

House Bill 305 will be assigned to a House committee in the near future.
