As summer quickly approaches, students all across Ohio close one chapter of their lives and open another as they graduate from high school and college. Graduation is an important moment in every young adult’s life, but it is but a moment. As each and every student walks across the stage to receive their diploma, I depart a piece of advice: stay engaged. Stay engaged with your community, stay engaged with your family, and stay engaged with your life, whether that involves further schooling or diving headfirst into the workforce.

Being involved with your community certainly leads to a more fulfilling life. Your local and state officials work hard to enact positive changes in your local communities. As your state representative, I know firsthand how important it is to hear the voices of the public in order to develop sound public policy for the betterment of your family and Ohio.

Remaining engaged with your family even after moving away and developing your own life is important. As you begin your life journey and make tough, life-altering decisions, your friends and family will still be there to fall back on for advice and help. Whether those people are your parents, your aunt, or another adult mentor, having someone you trust while navigating life’s channels can be helpful and reassuring.

My final piece of advice is to stay engaged with your own life. There are many different pathways, and there isn’t one that is the correct path. We all take different routes; we just have to find the one that is right for us. Sometimes that includes a four-year degree or graduate school, and sometimes it includes receiving certification from a technical school. No matter what path you take, following your passion and interests will only benefit you in the long run, leading to a rewarding life.

My sincere congratulations, graduates. Best of luck to you in all of your endeavors. If you ever have any questions concerning your state government, feel free to contact my office. I can be reached by calling (614) 466-8134, emailing Rep65@ohiohouse.gov, or writing to State Representative John Becker at 77 South High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215.
