Boccieri Testifies On Bill Requiring Ohio Schools To Use Domestic Steel
Legislation crafted in response to Sebring lead contamination crisis

State Rep. John Boccieri (D-Poland) today delivered sponsor testimony on his bill to require public schoolsand private schools that receive public funding to use U.S. steel for all construction projects. Joint-sponsored by Rep. Dan Ramos (D-Lorain), House Bill (HB) 57 is designed to ensure that steel infrastructure in schools is as reliable and safe as it can be.

“After visiting Sebring Middle School last year during the lead contamination crisis, and witnessing the water fountain pipes made of Chinese steel corroded with lead, I felt a duty to enact protections for our young, vulnerable students,” said Boccieri. “I believe that choosing to use defective foreign steel for critical infrastructure is absolutely unacceptable. We must work to ensure access to safe drinking water for our children, and in doing soweshould turn to what we know is reliable: American steel.”

Boccieri also noted that HB 57 will help Ohio avoid supporting China’s illegal, over-subsidized steel industry, which has received backlash from the international community for years for overproducing steel to the extent that the product is cheap and not up to quality standards.

“Our hardworking steel workers have suffered greatly from foreign steel dumping. Continuing to support countries that dump foreign steel into our markets undercuts U.S. and Ohio economic growth,” Boccieri added. “We should be doing more to produce and utilize our own reliable steel for our national and economic security.”

According to the Ohio Steel Council, the state steel industry provides $7.2 billion to Ohio’s economy and $600 million in state taxes. In addition, United Steelworkers reports that the American steel industry is one of the most efficient in the world, often producing a ton of finished steel in under one man-hour.

HB 57 is being heard in the House Economic Development, Commerce & Labor Committee.
