State Rep. Hearcel Craig (D-Columbus) was recognized as a Legislator of the Year by the Ohio AMVETS in a ceremony during their Mid-Winter Conference this weekend in Columbus. Each year, the historic organization honors elected officials whose efforts protect and enhance the rights of our military servicemen and women.

“I am honored to be recognized by a group that fights every day for our veterans and military families,” Craig said. “Our uniformed men and women sacrifice so much to protect the freedoms we hold dear, and it is important that we continue to honor their dignity and service in return.”

During the 131st General Assembly, Craig sponsored House Bill 102, legislation that incentivizes employers to hire military veterans. In addition, Craig introduced House Bill 105 to make sure military spouses qualify for unemployment insurance when their families relocate due to military service requirements.

Last month, Craig announced his return as a ranking member on the Armed Services, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security Committee. As a military veteran who served in the Army from 1970-1972, Craig has been a constant advocate for military servicemen during his time at the Statehouse.

AMVETS is a veterans service organization that assists military veterans with compensation claims at zero charge. The group also advises legislators as they shape public policy pertaining to veterans’ rights.
