State Representative Gary Scherer (R-Circleville) today was presented with the “2016 Legislator of the Year Award” from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for his commitment to reducing drunk driving in Ohio.

MADD selected 69 legislators from across the nation for this distinction, with Scherer being the only legislator from Ohio to be chosen.

Scherer was selected for this national honor in recognition of his work to pass House Bill 388, also known as Annie’s Law, which currently awaits consideration in the Ohio Senate. Named after a Chillicothe resident, Annie Rooney, Annie’s Law is aimed at reducing OVI recidivism in Ohio through the use of ignition interlock devices as an alternative to restricted driving privileges.

“I am humbled that MADD has selected me for this honor,” Scherer said. “Passing this legislation was a huge step forward in the effort to protect innocent Ohioans from drunk drivers, and I was pleased to be a small part of making some good come from Annie’s tragedy.”

On hand to present the award to Scherer was MADD Ohio’s Vice Chair of Public Policy, Andrea Rehkamp.

“For two years, Rep. Scherer, as the bill sponsor and state legislator, has championed the cause in Ohio for an all-offender ignition interlock law,” Rekamp said during the award presentation. “His effort to get Annie’s Law passed in Ohio will never be forgotten.”

Richard Rooney, Annie’s father, and Kate Rooney Lyaker, Annie’s sister, were also present for the award presentation.
