Honoring Our Fallen Veterans

Every day soldiers are protecting our country and representing the values of America. These men and women take great risks to fight for our country; the greatest risk, of course, is that they may lose their life in defense of our freedoms.  Many soldiers have been killed serving our great nation and Memorial Day is the day we honor these lost veterans.

We honor them, because of the incredible sacrifice they made so that we may live in peace. They laid down their lives for our country. Without the efforts from these fallen soldiers, America would be a very different place. Thanks to them, we are protected from dangers far away while enjoying liberty here. Selfless acts from servicemen and women do not go unnoticed and are admired. The United States prospers and remains safe under the careful watch of these men and women.

Through the enactment of Senate Bill 248 during the 127th General Assembly, the State of Ohio awards the Ohio Military Medal of Distinction to families who have lost loved ones in the armed forces. This year the House and Senate joined together in a solemn ceremony to present this award to the families of two men who lost their lives serving our country. The award is a symbol of gratitude for the efforts of those who died fighting for the United States.  Although these men are not with us anymore, their memory lives with us today through the freedoms we enjoy.

The noble sacrifices made by past veterans and current service members are not to go unnoticed, especially on Memorial Day.  I hope to thank veterans this weekend and take a moment to honor those who we have lost.  A simple thank you can go a long way and isn’t a hard task to accomplish.

This Memorial Day, I hope you will do just that as you pay tribute to our departed veterans. As we come together with family, friends and loved ones, maybe enjoying a barbecue and some time off work, let us think of those who might be missing their fallen hero today and I hope we can do what we are able to help those who need comfort.  I wish you a special Memorial Day.
