We have been witnessing, for far too many years, the havoc that heroin and opiates have inflicted upon our communities in Union and Marion counties. In some Ohio neighborhoods, coroners’ offices can’t keep up with the death toll and have reached out to local funeral homes for “temporary storage” when their morgues are full. The House’s version of the state operating budget, House Bill 49, takes new steps to combat this deadly epidemic through coordinated care efforts. These efforts can be broken down into four main areas: prevention, treatment, mental health care, and workforce initiatives, for a monetary investment of $170.6 million.

At the beginning of each general assembly, every odd-numbered year, the Ohio House and Senate undertake a monumental task—the biennial state operating budget. Through this package of bills, the legislature allocates the state’s financial resources with consideration of thousands of funding priorities. This year, the budget process has recently begun and will take several months before the final bills are agreed upon and signed by Governor Kasich. Because of the importance of this process, I’d like to take a moment to break down the ins and outs of the state budget process.

Just two days prior to that, Governor Kasich signed a bill into law that will further our goal of protecting the state’s elderly population in a very meaningful way. House Bill 50, legislation I was proud to sponsor, deals in part with the issue of guardianships.

House Bill 63 was passed by the Ohio House today, which expands the crime of endangering children to prohibit a person from selling or transferring, or attempting to sell or transfer, a child for any value.

 
 

05.11.16 - Ohio House Passes Bill Increasing Access To Biological Drugs

 

Today, the Ohio House passed legislation that allows pharmacists to substitute biologically similar products, or “biosimilars,” for any biological product prescribed by a physician. This is a similar concept to a consumer obtaining a generic prescription medication rather than a more expensive brand name drug.
