Representative Christina Hagan (R-Alliance) yesterday gave testimony in the Ohio House Judiciary Committee on House Bill 85, “Erin’s Law”, which requires each school district, community school and STEM school to include annual age-appropriate instruction in child sexual abuse prevention for students grade K-6, teachers and other professionals.

Rep. Hagan spoke about the legislation:

This legislation, Erin’s Law, gives every local school district the freedom to elect age-appropriate instruction in child sexual abuse prevention in the district’s or school’s health curriculum for students in grades kindergarten through sixth. In light of sexual violence that occurs at all ages, students need resources to prevent such from reoccurring and also need to know there are resources available to help those whom have become the victims of sexual assault. No child should be robbed of their innocence, and it is our job to educate and protect children in all possible ways from such harm. Erin’s Law has now been passed into law to protect and educate children in 20 states. Ohio is just one of the many states pending approval and passage. We are very hopeful that Ohio can accomplish this goal in 2015 to help advance Erin’s vision of educating our youth in all 50 states.

The bill is named for Erin Merryn, an author and activist who was the victim of continued abuse as a child. Ms. Merryn is now nationally recognized as a leader on this issue, promoting sexual abuse prevention education to children. “Erin’s Law” has been passed into law in 20 states.

State Representative Christina Hagan is currently serving her second term in the Ohio House of Representatives. She represents the 50th House District, which includes eastern Stark County.
