COLUMBUS—State Representative Candice Keller (R-Middletown) introduced House Bill 488, legislation to help children suffering with Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infection (PANDAS) and Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS).

The legislation will mandate health insurers in Ohio to cover medical treatments and procedures for children with PANDAS and PANS in order to provide the most effective and expedient pathway to providing lasting remission for these patients. The legislation would also create an annual PANDAS/PANS awareness day to be recognized by the state.

“Many families in this state are burdened with the cost of paying out of pocket for treatments like these that should be covered by their health insurance providers,” said Representative Keller. “I hope that this legislation will provide our children with the help they need and the support for our families who are simply trying to care for the ones they care about most.”

Approximately, 13,000 children in Ohio currently are suffering with PANDAS or PANS. However, many cases of this disease go undiagnosed or untreated. PANDAS/PANS does not have to debilitate these children for life if the illness is treated early and appropriately.
