Guest Column From State Representative Anne Gonzales
Making a Commitment to Honor Our Brave Veterans
November 12, 2013

As we approach Veterans Day, on November 11th, it is exceedingly important that we recognize the men and women who have bravely fought for our freedom.  However, this year, I want to focus on not only recognition, but on how we can actively help these veterans.

One way I am taking action as a representative in the Ohio House is by seeing what we can do for veterans when they come home as they look for steady employment.  It can be difficult for these individuals to find a job, but like most Ohioans, they want to work in our state and provide for their families.

I joint sponsored legislation known as House Bill 98.  This bill permits state licensing agencies to take into account a veteran’s skill set when they apply for a license.  In addition, it grants special extensions to members of the Reserve and National Guard whose licenses expired while they were mobilized.

By working with the Senate and Governor Kasich, we achieved our goal of limiting the obstacles that face these soldiers as they come home.   We crafted a bill that would benefit Ohio veterans who have gained skills during deployment that can be utilized in their field of expertise.

During the past 200 years, more than a million Ohio citizens have answered the call to serve their country, their state, and their community.  Today, almost 900,000 veterans call Ohio their home.  They are our community leaders, our business people, our neighbors and cherished members of our families.

Here in the Ohio House, I will continue to seek out ways that we can help veterans.  They very much deserve our attention, respect and gratitude.  I encourage everyone on Veterans Day to take the time to honor a veteran in your life or to reach out to a veteran who you have not yet had the opportunity to meet, even if it’s just to say, “thank you.”
