As I reflect on this past year, I am reminded of the many things that the Ohio Legislature has accomplished. This year we have made significant impacts through various endeavors, which I am excited to share with all of you. As your state representative, I have been working to accomplish as much as I can to help our community and state.

This year, House Bill 64, the state biennial budget was passed by my colleagues and me. This bill sets spending for the State of Ohio for the next two years and makes critical changes to ensure Ohio can operate efficiently.  I am proud of the changes we have made in the budget to help Ohioans, including reducing spending in FY’16 by $353.4 million, and $416.4 million in FY’17. Over the next two years, Ohioans will receive $1.9 billion in tax relief through small business and income tax cuts. The budget also ensures no school district will receive less state foundation funding in FY’16 or FY’17 than it did in FY’15.

Additionally, as Health and Aging Committee chair I have had the opportunity to make many contributions to health policy in Ohio, including passing the largest number of bills with bipartisan support in committee history. One of the bills, Sub. H.B. 4, gives physicians the power to authorize individuals to administer Naloxone, a drug that is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

Through the Health and Aging Committee, I also helped modernize laws for mid-level providers in Sub. S.B. 110, which allows physicians to remain the head of their medical team while expanding the reach of PAs and APRNs. Finally, I helped H.B. 168 to pass the Ohio House, legislation that includes the safe distribution of electronic cigarettes. This bill helps keep children away from nicotine products and establishes a $1,000 civil penalty for each violation.

This year I have been blessed to help pass numerous pieces of legislation that not only benefit my district, but the state of Ohio as well. I wish everyone a very happy New Year and I look forward to continuing to serve all of you in the year to come.
