MARIETTA -

State Representative Andy Thompson (R-Marietta) has announced that the Ohio fire marshal’s office is offering free weekend training to help volunteer firefighters meet state certification requirements.

The free training for March was held two weeks ago, but because of the overwhelming response to the program, the Ohio Fire Academy will be offering another set of classes in May at the Ohio Fire Academy in Reynoldsburg, east of Columbus. The classes will be held on May 4th and 5th and May 18th and 19th. Topics to be covered are equipment, pump operations, and how to extinguish a fire from the exterior. Participants will also take the state certification exam.

“The opportunity for volunteer firefighters to be able to get training at no cost is truly a benefit to our part of the state,” said Representative Thompson.

The program is designed to attract volunteers by providing the required 36 hours of training for free in a more convenient format than the typical, periodic classes that last for several weeks or months. Ohio’s fire chiefs have praised the class’s more condensed structure and its ability to provide high-quality training to volunteer departments that often cannot afford basic fire classes through vocational schools and private trainers.

Approximately 70 percent of fire departments in Ohio are operated by about 30,000 volunteer firefighters.

To enroll in the May training session, please contact Jay Clevenger at the Ohio Fire Academy at (614) 752-7180.
