State Rep. Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) today issued the following statement in response to the Republican-controlled House’s passage of House Bill (HB) 523, legislation to legalize the use of certain forms of medical marijuana in Ohio:

“After years of politicians in Columbus refusing to act on commonsense medical marijuana reform, the legislature is now fast-tracking a piecemeal bill with the hopes that it will diffuse an impending citizen-led effort to put medical marijuana rights in our constitution. The legislature needed to take a complete and fair approach to decriminalizing marijuana by supporting automatic expungement for past offenders and ensuring patients can access their medicine without fear of losing their job or unemployment benefits simply because they are sick. The people of Ohio should – without interference from the legislature – have the fundamental freedom to make their voices heard at the ballot box and chart a course for the future of their state.”
