08.05.15 - Reece Commemorates 50th Anniversary Of Voting Rights Act

Democratic legislators in both the House and Senate today announced resolutions commemorating the 50th anniversary of the federal Voting Rights Act. Passed in 1965 and signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Voting Rights Act was a historic piece of civil rights legislation that guaranteed all Americans – regardless of race – the constitutional right to vote without unfair barriers. The honorary resolutions will be introduced by Reps. Kathleen Clyde (D-Kent) and Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) in the House and Senate Minority Leader Joe Schiavoni (D-Boardman) and Senator Charleta Tavares (D-Columbus) in the Senate

Rep. Reece released the following statement regarding the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act:

"We’re beginning the next chapter in a new generation’s fight for our most basic and fundamental rights,” said Rep. Reece, who also serves as the President of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus and spoke at the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. “Unfortunately, fifty years since the passing of the historic Voting Rights Act, we are faced with new efforts to disenfranchise voters and to weaken the law that allows for all Americans to exercise their sacred duty as citizens. It is critical that we take the next step forward to protect our rights by passing a Voter Bill of Rights constitutional amendment, which will enshrine our commitment to an open and fair democratic process.”
