06.30.15 - Reece: Local Hiring Ban Axes Local Control, Sends Ohio Jobs Out Of State

State Rep. Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) today expressed disappointment in the passage of House Bill 180, legislation that prohibits cities and other municipalities from setting minimum standards for hiring local residents for public works projects. The minimum residency standards, currently in place in cities and municipalities around the state, let qualified workers earn the opportunity to find rewarding employment in their own communities.

“This bill is taxation without participation. Removing local hiring quotas allows for more out-of-state contractors to come over from Kentucky and Indiana and take away jobs from workers in Ohio,” said Reece. “I admit, I’m representing a special interest when it comes to this issue: the people of Ohio. We need to respect local control and empower local workers.”

06.26.15 - Rep. Alicia Reece Issues Statement On Approval Of The State Budget

Rep. Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) issued the following statement today on approval of House Bill 64, the state’s two-year operating budget bill:

“I fought hard to adequately fund Ohio’s historically black college, Central State University, and though I am pleased the state budget included more funding for the school—it was inadequate for the federal match.

“Too many of my constituents are concerned about their families’ future and how they will find ways to make ends meet, let alone get ahead. It is unfortunate that the largest budget in our state's history has left too many Ohioans behind. The bad outweighs the good in this budget and that is why I voted no.”

06.08.15 - Reece Applauds Governor's Appointment Of Harris To Police Training Oversight Board

Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) President and State Rep. Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) today applauded the governor’s decision to appoint Clayton Harris as a member of Ohio’s Peace Officer Training Commission.

“I applaud Governor Kasich for heeding our call for diversity on the state’s main police training oversight board,” said Reece. “While I have not had a chance yet to work with Chief Clayton Harris directly, I strongly believe it is important to have diversity on the state’s police training oversight board.”

In her position as OLBC President, Reece has been an outspoken proponent of bringing more diversity to the board in the wake of calls for justice reform and better police-community relations in the state. Reece also serves as a founding member on the governor’s Community-Police Relations Task Force.

According to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the Peace Officer Training Commission can make recommendations to the attorney general on rules governing the training and minimum requirements for law enforcement officials. The commission can also:

06.08.15 - Ohio Legislative Black Caucus, ODJFS Announce Summer Youth Employment Initiative

The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) announced today $2.7 million in funding to expand the 2015 youth employment program to include 14- and 15-year-olds. This will give additional teens the opportunity to gain work experience and earn a paycheck.

“Youth employment programs provide paid work experience to low-income teens,” said ODJFS Director Cynthia C. Dungey. “Through these programs, young men and women gain confidence, explore careers and build their resumes.”

“We are pleased to partner on this funded initiative. This employment initiative is one of the key elements of OLBC’s action agenda. Investing in our 14- and 15-years old while giving them work experience is critical at a time when our state is filled with teen suicide, poverty and crime reduction efforts,” said Ohio State Representative Alicia Reece, who held a press conference in Hamilton County announcing the initiative with clergy and community leaders today.

ODJFS will provide additional funding to well-established programs in Cuyahoga, Franklin, Hamilton and Montgomery counties. These programs have a proven history of serving 14- and 15-year-olds.

“I’m proud to see a partnership with business owners and community leaders to mentor and train fourteen and fifteen year-olds during summer work employment, which is critical to youth development,” said Rep. Christi Kuhns of Cincinnati.
