06.24.16 - Rep. Fedor: Ohio's Children In Jeopardy

State Rep. Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) today issued the following statement in response to data found in the 2016 Kids Count Data Book, which shows that Ohio’s rank for overall child well-being has dropped from 23rd to 26th in the nation:

“Unfortunately, it should come as little surprise that nearly one in four kids are living in poverty and young adults cannot afford to pay the rising tuition to attend college. Instead of passing policies to benefit working families and their children, the legislature has repeatedly shifted taxes to benefit the wealthiest Ohioans and steered hard-earned taxpayer money to failing, for-profit charters schools.

06.17.16 - Rep. Teresa Fedor Comments On Kasich Veto Of Polling Hour Extension Bill

State Rep. Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) today responded to Governor Kasich’s veto of Senate Bill 296, legislation that would have created obstacles to voters’ rights during an emergency:

“I am glad the governor listened to my concerns and those of citizens across the state regarding the restrictions Senate Bill 296 would have put on Ohioans’ fundamental right to vote. This restrictive legislation was tantamount to a modern-day poll tax and absolutely deserved to be vetoed,” said Fedor. “Now that SB 296 has been rejected, I hope the legislature will finally focus on the real issues confronting Ohio families. Instead of continuing to pass partisan legislation that violates the constitutional rights of Ohio voters, the legislature should instead focus on addressing Ohio’s abysmal infant mortality rate, cleaning up the failing, for-profit charter school industry, and paving a path to economic stability for working people.”

05.26.16 - Fedor Issues Statement On Report Of Decade-long Multi-million Dollar Charter School Embezzlement

Lead Democratic member of the House Education Committee State Rep. Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) today issued the following statement in response to reports that one-third of charter schools have closed or failed to even open after receiving $30 million in federal grants during the last decade:

“In no organization, public or private, is this abhorrent level of mismanagement and waste tolerated. But in Ohio it has not only been tolerated, but encouraged by state education officials who directed thirty million dollars over the last decade to charter schools that have closed or never even opened. By failing to hold charter schools to the same standards and expectations as traditional schools, the state is failing an entire generation of children who will not be able to earn the skills they need to succeed. State inaction has allowed charter schools to not only embezzle tax dollars, but to embezzle something more precious that cannot be measured or counted – the hopes and dreams of so many Ohio children and families.”

05.19.16 - Fedor Responds To National News Report Of Ohio's Largest Failing Online Charter School

The highest ranking Democratic member of the House Education Committee, Rep. Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo), today responded to a New York Times article which reported that “more students drop out of the Electronic Classroom (of Tomorrow) or fail to finish high school within four years than at any other school in the country."

“Today’s report confirms what so many of us in Ohio already know: failing charter schools continue to defraud taxpayers while our children fall further behind. Story after story from journalists in Ohio and throughout the country detail deep problems within Ohio’s charter school industry, yet the state refuses to take serious action,” Fedor said. “How many generations of kids must we fail before politicians find the political courage to crack down on profiteers that peddle broken promises to our taxpayers, parents, teachers and children?”

The Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (ECOT) is Ohio’s largest online charter school and was founded by William Lager, a software executive with subsidiary education companies that took in nearly $23 million in tax dollars for providing ECOT services in 2014. ECOT received about $115 million in tax dollars that year.
