06.30.15 - Patterson: Local Hiring Ban Axes Local Control, Sends Ohio Jobs Out Of State

State Rep. John Patterson (D-Jefferson) today expressed disappointment in the passage of House Bill 180, legislation that prohibits cities and other municipalities from setting minimum standards for hiring local residents for public works projects. The minimum residency standards, currently in place in cities and municipalities around the state, let qualified workers earn the opportunity to find rewarding employment in their own communities.

“At a time when our state economy is still sluggish, it is wrong to give out of state workers employment opportunities over similarly qualified Ohio residents,” said Patterson. “It’s simple: local workers employed in local jobs stimulate the local economy.”

06.26.15 - Rep. Patterson: State Budget A Failed Economic Plan For The Wealthy Few At The Expense Of Schools, Communities

On Friday, State Rep. John Patterson (D-Jefferson) and Ohio House Democratic Caucus members stood in opposition to House Bill 64, the state’s two-year budget bill. Democratic legislators voted against the measure, which they say lacks a comprehensive vision and offers little for hardworking Ohioans to get ahead. Instead, Democrats argue the bill advances policies that rig the tax system to help the richest one-percent and special interests, such as charter schools, big utility companies and oil and gas companies, in addition to partisan attacks on working Ohioans.

05.26.15 - Patterson Helps Re-name Portion Of U.S. Route 20 To Honor Local Ashtabula WWI Veterans

State Rep. John Patterson (D-Jefferson) announced today that a portion of U.S. Route 20 has been designated as the “World War I Veterans Highway.” The newly-designated stretch of highway runs between Ashtabula and North Kingsville, and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans during the First World War.

“Today’s highway naming brings honor and respect, long overdue, to those men and women who sacrificed so much in that Great War,” said Rep. Patterson. “Although the veterans of this war are no longer with us, we must preserve the memory of their sacrifices for future generations.”

05.21.15 - Ashtabula Train Depot Receives "Most Endangered" Designation

State Rep. John Patterson (D-Jefferson) participated today in an event at the Ohio Statehouse during which the Ashtabula Train Depot was named to Preserve Ohio’s 2015 Most Endangered list of historic sites. This year’s list identifies 13 historically significant Ohio sites that are in jeopardy due to demolition, disinvestment, or indifference.

“Today’s announcement helps draw much-needed attention to the significance of our historic train station,” said Rep. Patterson. “As a former United States history teacher, I understand how important it is to preserve such sites for future generations. Maintaining the Ashtabula Train Depot will help contribute to a robust and cultured society, and will serve as an important reminder of our past.”
