06.30.16 - Reece Responds To Federal Court Decision In Purge Lawsuit

Ohio Legislative Black Caucus President and State Rep. Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) today issued the following statement in response to the recent federal district court’s decision in the voter purging lawsuit:

“Purging voters from the rolls simply for being inactive is undemocratic and disproportionately disenfranchises minority and low-income voters in Ohio. I am deeply disappointed that a federal district court has signed off on the secretary of state’s efforts to strip thousands of Ohio voters of their most fundamental freedom.

06.28.16 - Rep. Reece Recalls Inspiration Of Late Coach Pat Summitt

“Today, as many athletes and coaches mourn the death of legendary Coach Pat Summitt, who broke down barriers for women not only in basketball but in all sports, I am reminded of the impact Coach Summitt had on my life as a young athlete.

“I first met Coach Summit when her team, the Tennessee “Lady Vols”, came to my hometown of Cincinnati to play in the Communiplex Women's Sports Hall of Fame tournament started by my parents, Dr. Steven and the late Barbara Reece. Coach Summitt not only brought her team to play – and win, I might add – but she became a friend to my parents and engaged them in the Title IX movement. She later helped brin the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Final to Cincinnati in 1997, when she led the “Lady Vols” to their fifth national title.

06.23.16 - Rep. Reece: SCOTUS Decision Ensures American Dream Can Be Reality For Millions

President of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) and state Rep. Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) today released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the University of Texas’ affirmative action program:

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling reaffirms that higher education can continue to be a path out of poverty for the many historically disadvantaged Americans. I am pleased that some of our most basic American values - the equal opportunity to pursue an education and an appreciation for our nation’s diversity - are being upheld to ensure generations of Americans have the opportunity to carve their own path toward greatness.

06.17.16 - OLBC President Reece Comments On Kasich Veto Of Poll Tax Bill

Ohio Legislative Black Caucus President and State Rep. Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) today responded to Governor Kasich’s veto of Senate Bill 296:

“I am pleased that the governor heeded the call from Democratic lawmakers and voters across the state to veto this modern-day poll tax. As we have witnessed here in Hamilton County time and again, it is critically important that citizens and officials be able to respond to emergencies and ensure voters are able to exercise their fundamental right to vote,” said Reece. “Both the recent court rulings on Ohio’s unconstitutional voting restrictions and the governor’s action today highlight how disconnected the majority’s legislative priorities are from reality. Instead of throwing up roadblock after roadblock to voting, we need action to permanently protect every Ohioan’s right to the ballot box.”
